What can I say. Hailing from Pontypridd we at Pontydysgu are always proud to promote all things Welsh – yes even Newport. Great stuff – hope you enjoy it.

Shaping Space: The d.school’s Environments Collaborative from Stanford d.school on Vimeo.
There are some great ideas emerging about how we can design learning spaces. this makes even more criminal the UK CONDEM government’s decision to abolish the school rebuilding programme, condemning thousands of teachers and learners to struggling in old, inadequate and frequently run down buildings totally unsuited to learning.
This is brilliant.I found it on the Bravatuesdays web site. As edupunk pin-up boy Jim Groom says “This is a remarkable talk, and once again David Harvey nails it. What’s more, the RSA animation crew make the talk that much more powerful and entertaining—there’s really a there there with this kind of visualization.”
The Opencast community is a collaboration of individuals, higher education institutions and organizations working together to explore, develop, define and document best practices and technologies for management of audiovisual content in academia. The community has recently announced release of Matterhorn, a free, open-source platform to support the management of educational audio and video content. This video resents Insights on the Opencast Community, how it has enabled them to build and learn together, it’s role as an incubator for research and new projects, and how the Opencast Community can be a force for change.

This video is by Jane Challinor from Nottingham University in the UK.
I love this video. As the blurb says “A video short of over 30 peoples views on what it means to be co-operative. Produced for Co-operatives Fortnight 2010 “There is an alternative”. www.thereisanalternative.coop.”
Firstly it is heartening to see any other economic models than multi national corporations taking everything over. But I also love the way the producer has used short clips of ‘talking heads’ shots to tell the story of co-operatives. Great storyboarding – now I am thinking how we can emulate this approach.
Interesting and timely presentation by Ilone Buchem for thePLE2010 conference in Barcelona in July.
Great promo video made by Anuraj Dadhich who is presently undertaking an internship with Pontydysgu and the University of Bremen. The YouTube blurb says “The mind blowing promo of AlcherXtreme, IIT Guwahati’s cultural festival. …. Caution: May cause Addiction.”
Despite the ever growing access to multi media technologies and the popularity of video sharing sites, I am finding it hard to track down great videos to feature on the front page of the Pontydysgu site. Anyway, this one somehow came up in a search and I like it very much. It is a bit short on information – the caption to the video by alirizaaribas says — “THIS IS ONLY FOR MY BEST TEACHER.”
If you have ideas for presentations or videos you think we should feature – your own or other peoples – please get in touch.
I found this video on Cool Infographics which is always worth looking at for interesting videos and data representations. It is an illustration of a presentation by Dan Pink created by the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. The video discusses research on what motivates people, and provides some interesting results.
Cyborg patented?
Forbes reports that Microsoft has obtained a patent for a “conversational chatbot of a specific person” created from images, recordings, participation in social networks, emails, letters, etc., coupled with the possible generation of a 2D or 3D model of the person.
Racial bias in algorithms
From the UK Open Data Institute’s Week in Data newsletter
This week, Twitter apologised for racial bias within its image-cropping algorithm. The feature is designed to automatically crop images to highlight focal points – including faces. But, Twitter users discovered that, in practice, white faces were focused on, and black faces were cropped out. And, Twitter isn’t the only platform struggling with its algorithm – YouTube has also announced plans to bring back higher levels of human moderation for removing content, after its AI-centred approach resulted in over-censorship, with videos being removed at far higher rates than with human moderators.
Gap between rich and poor university students widest for 12 years
Via The Canary.
The gap between poor students and their more affluent peers attending university has widened to its largest point for 12 years, according to data published by the Department for Education (DfE).
Better-off pupils are significantly more likely to go to university than their more disadvantaged peers. And the gap between the two groups – 18.8 percentage points – is the widest it’s been since 2006/07.
The latest statistics show that 26.3% of pupils eligible for FSMs went on to university in 2018/19, compared with 45.1% of those who did not receive free meals. Only 12.7% of white British males who were eligible for FSMs went to university by the age of 19. The progression rate has fallen slightly for the first time since 2011/12, according to the DfE analysis.
Quality Training
From Raconteur. A recent report by global learning consultancy Kineo examined the learning intentions of 8,000 employees across 13 different industries. It found a huge gap between the quality of training offered and the needs of employees. Of those surveyed, 85 per cent said they , with only 16 per cent of employees finding the learning programmes offered by their employers effective.
